Florida man who landed at U.S. Capitol thought he'd be intercepted

A Florida man who piloted a small gyro copter past major Washington, D.C. landmarks last week said on Sunday he had fully expected to be intercepted before he landed on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, creating a national security scare. Douglas Mark Hughes, 61, a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, described his flight upon arriving home in Ruskin, Florida, early on Sunday. He recalled it being colder than he had expected flying from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Washington, where the sight of the Washington Monument helped guide him to the Capitol grounds. He was allowed to return to Florida, but ordered to remain at home in detention until he is due back in Washington for a preliminary hearing on May 8.

From Okla. City to 9/11: 20 years on, rescue workers who responded to both share a bond

It was just after 9 a.m. on April 19, 1995, when the bomb went off outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. It was one of those events that seem to make the world stop turning. At the time, it was the worst terror attack on U.S. soil. Lt. (now Capt.) Stephen Spall of the New York City Fire Department was driving home from his shift when he heard the news on the radio. He immediately called in to see if he needed to go back to work. The next day, he was on a plane to Oklahoma.

Torrential rain floods Houston before heading toward New Orleans

Torrential rain triggered flooding on the streets of Houston and sent spectators fleeing from a circus south of the Texas city, officials said on Saturday, as the storm system headed east toward Louisiana and neighboring states. The heavy rainfall followed a front that built up along the Gulf Coast, causing moisture to accumulate along it, said Mark Paquette, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.com. Up to five inches of rain fell in some parts of Houston on Friday and into early Saturday. Water accumulated in streets with poor drainage and caused flooding, Paquette said.

By Natasja Sheriff NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jurors began a third day of deliberations on Friday in the trial of a former New York deli worker accused of murdering 6-year-old Etan Patz, whose 1979 disappearance raised national awareness of missing and abducted children. The jury in state Supreme Court in Manhattan appear to have focused on the confession of Pedro Hernandez, 54, who told police in 2012 that he had choked the boy, stuffed him in a box and left him in a lower Manhattan alley. Jurors in the kidnapping and murder trial on Thursday asked the judge, Maxwell Wiley, to repeat his instructions about how they should weigh his confession, which Hernandez's defense lawyers say was coerced. The Patz case changed the way authorities respond to reports of missing and abducted children.

By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - The intense publicity around Wednesday's conviction of former National Football League star Aaron Hernandez for a 2013 murder will make it more difficult to seat an impartial jury in the next trial he faces, on charges of a 2012 double slaying. The jurors who found the 25-year-old former New England Patriots tight end guilty of murdering 27-year-old Odin Lloyd told reporters on Wednesday that they had known nothing about the additional murder charges Hernandez faced until after they reached a verdict. They also said they were unaware of another 2013 incident in which a former friend said that Hernandez shot him in the face.
