Naimi says Saudi oil production near record high in April

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi says Saudi Arabia is producing near record levels of crude in April, underscoring the kingdom's willingness to defend market share at a time when oil markets have staged a fragile recovery. There are worries that growing production from Saudi Arabia and other members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) could snuff out a recent rebound in oil prices, particularly with economic growth in key oil consumer China the slowest in six years in the first quarter. OPEC had said its overall output surged to 30.79 million barrels per day in March, up 810,000 bpd from the previous month, with demand higher than expected due to lower prices. Naimi said that oil production in Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest crude exporter, was "around 10 million" bpd in April.

The fund says institutional investors, and the savers they represent, are wasting money paying multiple fees amid a fragmentation of anonymous trading venues over the past decade. The dark pools have become associated with the phenomenon of front-running, in which bid and offer information is used by high-frequency traders to pre-empt transactions and make a profit at the expense of investors. Over the past five to six years the fund has cut its use of algorithms in trading to 40 percent from as high as 75 percent, Schanke said.

Gupta is the highest-ranking corporate official to be convicted in the U.S. government's multi-year probe of insider trading in the hedge fund industry. The high court rejected Gupta's appeal of a March 2014 ruling by the New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that had upheld his conviction. BP says taking more oil from Iraq as payment

Low oil prices and the fight against Islamic State have forced Baghdad to delay billions of dollars of cash payments which it owes to international oil companies (IOCs), so they have been allowed to take oil shipments instead. Michael Townshend, BP's president in the Middle East, ‎said current total production from Iraq's giant Rumaila field was about 1.4 million barrels per day and was expected to remain steady in 2015.

Some banks tried to renege on deals after SNB's policy U-turn: Bloomberg

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J The banks sought to reduce their losses by trying to renege on transactions by contacting customers after the SNB decision, asking to discuss the rates they'd traded on, Bloomberg said. Some currency trading firms and major banks lost out when the SNB scrapped its three-year-old cap on the franc against the euro (EURCHF=EBS) without warning on Jan. 15. Barclays lost "tens of millions" of dollars and retail broker Alpari UK filed for insolvency. The banks' attempts to reopen deals present their rivals such as electronic trading venues and established exchanges with a new argument - do business through us rather than dealers who can cancel or alter your trades after they have been executed, Bloomberg said.

Greece's Varoufakis warns of Grexit contagion

Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis speaks at the Brookings Institution in Washington Greece's Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that if Greece were to leave the euro zone, there would be an inevitable contagion effect. "Some claim that the rest of Europe has been ring-fenced from Greece and that the ECB has tools at its disposal to amputate Greece, if need be, cauterize the wound and allow the rest of euro zone to carry on." "I very much doubt that that is the case. Sooner or later it's going to start raising interest rates, political tensions, capital flight." His comments were recorded before those of Mario Draghi, the European Central Bank's president, who this weekend said the euro zone was better equipped than it had been in the past to deal with a new Greek crisis but warned of uncharted waters if the situation deteriorates. Euro zone deputy finance ministers gave Athens last Thursday a deadline of six working days to present a revised economic reform plan.

Florida man who landed at U.S. Capitol thought he'd be intercepted

Gyro copter that was flown onto the grounds of the U.S. Capitol is seen on the west front lawn in Washington A Florida man who piloted a small gyro copter past major Washington, D.C. landmarks last week said on Sunday he had fully expected to be intercepted before he landed on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, creating a national security scare. Douglas Mark Hughes, 61, a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, described his flight upon arriving home in Ruskin, Florida, early on Sunday. He recalled it being colder than he had expected flying from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Washington, where the sight of the Washington Monument helped guide him to the Capitol grounds. He was allowed to return to Florida, but ordered to remain at home in detention until he is due back in Washington for a preliminary hearing on May 8.
