Frank Lloyd Wright school's future divides leaders

The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture's quest for a way to keep its accreditation status has some school board members at odds with the foundation operating it. Last week, the Scottsdale-based Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation announced it would not spin off the school into an independent corporation as a way to abide by new standards to gain accreditation. That decision has shaken the school's Board of Governors, who say that could mean the program would eventually become a shell of itself. (AP Photo) PHOENIX (AP) — The future of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture has divided the institution named for the iconic designer. The quest to keep its accreditation status has some school board members concerned the degree program will end, while its foundation denied the school is in danger of closing.

Weak data to test BOJ's rosy economic view, policy on hold

Bank of Japan Governor Kuroda attends the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in Jackson Hole While the BOJ is likely to stick to its assessment that the economy is recovering moderately, pessimists on the board may propose offering a bleaker view on components such as factory output, say sources familiar with the bank's thinking. "It's pretty clear from data out so far that the economy is undershooting the BOJ's forecast," said Yoshiki Shinke, chief economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute. "The rebound in July-September may prove to be much weaker than expected." The BOJ cut its assessment on exports earlier this month to say they were "weakening" but left intact its view that factory output, while also weakening, continues to "rise as a trend". Household spending fell more than expected in July and analysts expect bad weather and lasting effects from the tax hike to weigh on consumption in coming months, casting doubt on the BOJ's view that domestic demand remains firm.

Merkel's conservatives set to hold Saxony, euroskeptics make breakthrough

Saxony's state Premier Tillich, candidate for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the Saxony state election, and Social Democrat (SPD) top candidate Dulig attend television debates upon first exit polls in Dresden By Stephen Brown and Annika Breidthardt BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives were poised to cling to power in Sunday's election in the east German state of Saxony but new right-leaning rival Alternative for Germany (AfD) made a breakthrough by winning its first seats in a state assembly. Early results gave Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) nearly 40 percent of the vote, which would be their worst performance in a state they have run since German unification. The hardline Left and Social Democrats (SPD) were running second and third. The AfD, founded in early 2013 to oppose the euro zone bailouts, was set to beat all forecasts with 10 percent in the first of three eastern elections in a fortnight that could see the party establish itself as a force in German politics.
